PROJECT BRIEF
Being one of the first homes built on a plot of land down Beauvoir avenue, It wasn’t long until our clients home was built in front of blocking their precious sea views! The brief was simple, get my view back! A second story was proposed to elevate the viewing angle to see over the neighbouring properties. Incorporated into the new floor design was a big open bedroom / living area , A big walk in wardrobe, a ensuite and a lift, yes! A lift! This new floor was designed to also be accessed by a traditional stair well surrounded by glass balustrades and handrails.
How did we tackle the project?
How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time! First we had to establish safe working zones as the clients wished to remain in the house during construction, so safety was our big concern. We then had to demolish a massive portion of the existing lower wall and roof framing where the new floor was to be built. We soon needed to call in the shrink wrap specialists to keep the weather out during construction before continuing to construct the second story according to the architectural plans.
The challenges of construction
Working with an existing structure can be difficult and so we had to correct discrepancies as we built the new floor. Another challenge was building over rooms in the existing house that were to remain untouched, which meant not damaging the ceilings while changing framing to support the new floor build. Parts of the house required attention while discovering a leaking shower but considering the complexity of the project their were no major problems.
